Safely Home by Randy Alcorn

“It cost him everything he had…but he gained everything that mattered.”

The 10th anniversary edition of Randy Alcorn’s stirring fictional account Safely Home opens with an update one the Church in China. Far from the free society that is touted in the press, the underground church is still very real and in very real danger from physical, economic, and emotional persecution. The question for those in the Land of the Free? What are we willing to do about it?

Safely Home is an engaging read from the first scene where three watchers look on from afar with anticipation. As the book progresses we see these men are martyrs linked forever to one of the main characters, Li Quan. Their heavenly perspective serves as a backdrop to the story unfolding in the natural world and gives a glimpse into the Father’s heart concerning His children.

The story follows former friends and college roommates Ben Fielding, now a power-suit wearing businessman in line to be CEO of a thriving company, and Li Quan, an aspiring professor and writer turned locksmith’s assistant. When the two reunite after more than twenty years, they have changed dramatically from their Harvard days, each walking in both riches and poverty in his own way.

Over the course of the novel, Li Quan becomes a source of conviction for his highly self-self-focused friend all while walking through difficulties with amazing courage and resolve. His life and words challenge more than Ben Fielding; they reach through the pages and challenge us as readers to open our eyes and to make a firm stand for the Lord we claim to know and serve.
